'Your NGO helped me a lot, especially in terms of moral support while I was still in prison. You visited us, you talked to us. My stress reduced a lot when I was still in custody. Your NGO also helped my family, namely my mother with procedures at the social security office and my wife with her addiction problem.'
MISSION & HISTORY.
Not A Number was founded in 2017 as a direct response to the high re-offending and re-imprisonment rates in Mauritius, working towards the creation of a safer Mauritius for the benefit of society.
The NGO has been offering resettlement services to detainees in different prisons in Mauritius. It started with Petit Verger Prison (2020, 2022) and Rodrigues Prison (2021) where its Brick By Brick project was delivered. In 2023, with the support of MCBFF and NSIF, Not A Number was able to offer a more enhanced level of support, focused on further developing self-awareness, cognitive skills and motivation, while also tripling the number of detainees supported.
In 2025, Not A Number has had the opportunity to further develop its services by adding relapse prevention sessions to its in-custody programme.
Not A Number's mission is to contribute to a safer society through empowerment and innovation. It's values are:
Impact - making a difference – safer, thriving communities..
Holistic - addressing multiple needs in a coordinated way.
Innovation - using cutting-edge best practice and technological advances.
Integrity - transparency in operations and staying true to our ethos.
Professionalism - highly trained staff, aiming for world class service.
MEET OUR TEAM.
PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.
Since 2020, our dedicated team has been providing a reintegration support service in prison. Over time, our focus has evolved to provide more holistic support to a wider reach of participants, with a sustained follow up after release. Such integrated support is a much-needed response to high recidivism rates and a historically punitive approach to imprisonment.
A period in prison should not mean a life of exclusion and stigma. It is vital to create an environment that cultivates opportunities for change and supports people in becoming more aware of their challenges, their thinking, and their actions, and begin the task of building a stable and positive life upon release.
Along with our main through-the-gates programme, we have a career exploration for children and also assist in the capacity building of other organisations.
Prisoner Reintegration
Inspir Mwa Resettlement Support Services
Our prison-based programme has been developed over time to tackle the root causes of reoffending and provide ‘through-the-gates” support to those who are seeking assistance to live a life free from crime. There are a number of key pathways that we focus on during individual and group sessions which aim to nurture the awareness, insight and skills to successfully reintegrate back into society, while ensuring a pragmatic focus on tackling the specific barriers that each person faces. Currently, the NGO is present each week at both Petit Verger Prison and Richelieu Open Prison on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Capacity Building
For other organisations
Since its formation, the NGO has undertaken a range of capacity building initiatives contributing to the strengthening of the Mauritian criminal justice sector as well as civil society more broadly. Whether through targeted training programs, interactive workshops, or events, these efforts focus on enhancing the practical skills and knowledge of key stakeholders, including NGO's , correctional staff, legal practitioners, students, and members of community-based organisations.
These initiatives foster cross-sector collaboration, encourage dialogue on systemic reform, and equip participants with practical tools to improve justice delivery through evidence-based approaches. Areas of focus have so far included prisoner resettlement, criminogenic factors, case management process, crime and youth, safeguarding, and professional boundaries (in CJS sector).

For children
At Not A Number, we believe deeply in the immense potential that exists inside each person, and it is essential for young people to become aware of their ability to achieve great things if they set their mind to it. With this in mind, since 2020, we have been providing an annual career exploration programme for young children from various parts of the island and recently in Rodrigues as well! This programme is thoughtfully designed with workshops, outings and activities, to provide children immersive opportunities to learn more about different worlds of work, to meet people doing all sorts of interesting jobs and to experience these different work environments first hand. Our aim – to create as many inspiring moments as possible, to expand horizons, and of course to have fun!

MORE ABOUT IMRSS.
Screening of
Participants
Participation in the programme is completely voluntary and while people may join the programme via different means, all prospective candidates are screened using globally validated tools harnessing both qualitative and quantitative insights to ensure that urgent needs are identified and relevant referrals for support made without delay.
Individual Support
Eligible programme participants are offered the long-term individualised support of a dedicated Reintegration Support Worker, who ensures sustained and seamless follow up. Using a case management approach, the RSW completes a comprehensive needs assessment and works closely with the participant to co-create an individual action plan focused on tackling their barriers to reintegration and providing the personal and social support that they require.
Emotional Wellbeing
While many strategies for wellbeing and resilience are embedded into our group programmes, for those who request or require more intensive support or who are experiencing severe distress or mental health challenges, they are able to receive support from our AHPC-registered team clinical psychologist, either in prison or post-release in the community.
Inspir Mwa
Programme
This programme is delivered weekly at both Petit Verger Prison and Richelieu Open Prison. Participants undergo a journey of exploration and practice, with a range of vital topics focused on self-awareness, emotional regulation, and employability. Through this programme, they are given the tools and space to reflect on how they perceive themselves and the world around them, to craft a vision for their future and define the steps required to make progress in their lives. Stress management and anger management strategies are practised, together with problem solving techniques. The latter part of the programme focuses on employability, enabling participants to prepare a cv, practice interview techniques, and learn about employer expectations, job search, and disclosure of offences.
Relapse Prevention
For those of our beneficiaries who have had historical difficulties with addiction, they are able to attend our evidence-based Relapse Prevention programme, also offered each week in prison. Rooted in lived experience and local realities, the workshops slowly unpack the science behind addiction in a way that is accessible and easily understood. Participants are able to reflect on and identify their triggers for consumption, and patterns of conditioning and dependence, while also learning about coping strategies and what resources and services are available in the community in case of relapse. In some cases, sessions are conducted with family members to help them in better understanding how addiction affects a person and to connect them with support resources if needed.
Vocational Training
Alongside existing training options provided by the Mauritius Prison Service, the NGO directly provides vocational training in Construction Skills and Landscaping Maintenance. This training is delivered in close partnership with Mauritius Institute of training and Development (MITD), and offers all the necessary protective equipment, tools and materials. The masonry training includes 130 hours of guided learning while the landscaping maintenance includes 70 hours. All trainees who successfully complete the training receive a certificate from MITD. The aim of these training courses is to equip trainees with the foundational skills required in these fields so that they may utilise them upon release to earn an income, either through ad-hoc work opportunities or more regular employment with a company.
